The Most Common Heating Options for British Homes

Deciding how to heat your home is an important choice that can affect your comfort, energy bills and carbon footprint. For British homeowners, there are several good options to consider when choosing a heating system. Here is an overview of the most popular and practical heating solutions for UK homes.

Heating options UK

Gas Central Heating

Gas central heating is by far the most common type of home heating system in the UK. Around 63% of British households use gas for heating and hot water.

With a gas central heating system, a central gas boiler heats water that is then pumped through radiators throughout the home. The boiler can also provide hot water on demand.

Gas heating offers several advantages. It provides effective warmth through the radiators and is convenient with temperature controls in each room. Modern high-efficiency gas condensing boilers can also help minimise energy bills and carbon emissions.

While the upfront cost of installing gas central heating can be high, it usually pays for itself within a few years due to lower running costs compared to other systems. And gas boilers require little maintenance beyond an annual service.

Electric Heating

Electric home heating has become more popular in recent years. Around 26% of British homes now use electric systems as their primary heating source.

Electric heating options include panel heaters mounted on walls, underfloor heating mats, and central heating systems running on electricity instead of gas. Heat pumps are also growing in popularity.

Electric systems provide zone heating so you only heat occupied rooms. Running costs can be lower than gas depending on your electricity tariff. And electricity is seen as a greener fuel than gas for heating.

However, electricity is more expensive per unit of energy compared to gas. And power cuts during cold weather can leave all-electric homes without heating and hot water.

Wood Burners

Modern wood burning stoves are becoming increasingly popular for home heating. When properly installed and operated, wood burners provide an efficient and sustainable way to heat a single room or supplement a main gas or electric system.

Wood burning stove installation requires careful planning and should be done by a qualified professional. Key considerations include the stove location and hearth dimensions, adequate ventilation and air supply, and chimney/flue requirements. Professional installation helps ensure the stove operates safely and efficiently.

Compared to fossil fuels, burning wood releases less net carbon dioxide. And sustainably sourced timber provides a renewable fuel. However, wood burners must be correctly used to minimise air pollution.

Oil Central Heating

Around 4% of British homes, mostly in rural areas, use an oil-fired central heating system. This works much like a gas boiler system with radiators but uses heating oil stored in an outdoor tank.

While oil heating is less common today, it remains an effective option for homes without access to mains gas. And oil boilers can be just as efficient as modern gas condensing boilers.

The main downsides are higher fuel costs compared to gas, and the need for oil tank maintenance and deliveries. But for some rural homes, oil central heating is still the best heating solution.

Choosing the Right Heating System

When deciding how to heat your British home, consider factors like upfront costs, fuel prices in your area, maintenance requirements, and environmental impact. Most homes opt for gas central heating for convenience, affordability, and effectiveness. But electric, wood burning or oil heating may suit some properties better. Each option has pros and cons to weigh up.
